Each month, I’ll be posting a spreadsheet of every new book of poetry published in the US. April is likely to be the largest this year, as many presses try to time releases for National Poetry Month. It’s the only list of its type that I know of, so I’m curious to see what uses people find. If you’re a publisher or author, feel free contact me with additions or corrections or to send review copies. Chad W. Post already covers new works in translation, so those efforts are not duplicated here.
A few that look especially interesting:
- Anne Carson’s Nox
. An elegy for the poet’s brother, influenced by Catullus 101 (Found in the Folio: Catullus). New York Magazine reviewed the book, calling it “deeply moving.” (New Directions publicity page for Nox)
- Maurice Manning’s The Common Man
. Manning has written a handful of solid books in the past. Poetry Daily sampled “The Burthen of Mystery Indeed” from the book earlier this month.
- Starting Today: 100 Poems for Obama’s First 100 Days
. Starting with Elizabeth Alexander’s inaugural poem, Rachel Zucker and Arielle Greenberg asked 99 more poets to contribute a piece. The results – from a wide variety of poets and traditions – are well worth reading. (University of Iowa Press’ publicity page for the book)
- Louise Glück chose Ken Chen’s Juvenilia
for this year’s Yale Younger Poets award. Previously, the prize has published first collections of Adrienne Rich, W.S. Merwin, John Ashbery, and Robert Hass. (Chen’s website. And Yale’s publicity page for the book)
